How to Measure for the Call Size of Thermal Doors

We carry several standard sizes for doors. Before you order your door, it is very important to determine the "call size" of the door you will need. The call size is simply the width and height of the rough opening in the wall where the entire door (including jamb and frame) will be installed. Here are the best ways to determine the call size without having to remove the door to get to the rough opening.

Method 1: Measure the width and height of the swing-out door only, in its closed position from the outside of your home, and use these charts to determine the call size.

Swing-Out Door Width ► 31 7/8" 33 7/8"
Actual Call Size Width ► 32" 34"
Swing-Out Door Height 72" 76" 78" 80"
Actual Call Size Height 72" 76" 78" 80"

Method 2: You can also measure the entire door frame, (including the flange with the screw holes) from the outside of your home, and refer to the charts below to determine the call size.

Entire Outside Frame Width 34 1/4" 36 1/4"
Actual Call Size Width 32" 34"
Entire Outside Frame Height 74 1/4" 78 1/4" 80 1/4" 82 1/4"
Actual Call Size Height 72" 76" 78" 80"

Method 3: You can also measure the inside jamb from the inside of your home. Measure from side jamb to side jamb for the width, top jamb to the lowest part of the threshold for the height and refer to the charts below.

Jamb to Jamb Width 30 1/2" 32 1/2"
Actual Call Size Width 32" 34"
Jamb to Threshold Height 70 1/2" 74 1/2" 76 1/2" 78 1/2"
Actual Call Size Height 72" 76" 78" 80"

To be more certain about determining the call size, we recommended that you measure your existing door as many ways as possible. We will help you cross reference your measurements and determine the call size for your door.

Important: The measurements on this page correspond to the Phillips brand of doors, the only brand we carry. A Phillips door can in most cases replace another brand, but bear in mind your measurements may be different than those listed on this page. Please contact us with your measurements, and we will help you!

How to Identify Left or Right Hinge: Look at the door from the outside of the home. The side with the hinges determines left or right. (Example: hinges on the right, right-hinged door)
